The Institute of Maritime History (IMH) is a non-profit 501(c) 3 corporation dedicated to research, preservation, and education in nautical archaeology and maritime history.

 

AFFILIATED INSTITUTIONS

The Institute of Maritime History (IMH) works with several public and private research organizations to help further the mission of preserving and understanding our maritme history.

The Museum of Underwater Archaeology (MUA)
The online Museum of Underwater Archaeology (MUA) is a non profit organization incorporated in 2004. Its mission is to assist and promote the use of the Internet by ethical professional, student, and avocational underwater archaeologists. In support of that goal the MUA helps underwater archaeologists present their research to the general public by creating web based museum style exhibits as well as announce their latest projects. The MUA will also propose and work toward creating new online resources for research and sponsor a blog to share ideas.

The Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP)
LAMP is dedicated to the research, design, investigation and interpretation of St. Augustine's maritime history. Through historical and archaeological research, LAMP will explore and delineate the numerous shipwreck sites associated with the creation and development of the nation's oldest port.

Maine Community Foundation (MCF)
The Maine Community Foundation holds more than 800 charitable funds established by donors for the benefit of communities across the state. MCF promotes active philanthropy by stewarding charitable funds and making effective grants.

Texas A&M University Nautical Archaeology Program (NAP)
The Nautical Archaeology Program is a part of the Department of Anthropology at Texas A&M University. The program was established in 1976. Students and faculty conduct underwater archaeological research in conjunction with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology in various regions of the world, delving into time periods from prehistory to the recent past, and working with a plethora of societies and cultures. Students attending the program work in the classroom as well as in the field, and are encouraged to pursue individual projects that will help direct nautical archaeology's future. IMH also works with the Conservation Research Laboratory and the Archaeological Preservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M.

College of WIlliam and Mary Department of Anthropology
The Department of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary offers strong programs in undergraduate and graduate studies. Our faculty and focus reach around the world, fostering an interdisciplinary culture, with long-standing links to American Studies, History and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Achill Archaeological Field School
The Achill Archaeological Field School was founded in 1991 as a Training School for students of archaeology and anthropology. The Field School is based at the Achill Folklife Centre in Dooagh and at the Deserted Village of Slievemore, both of which are located in the west of Ireland on Achill Island in County Mayo.

Gulf of Maine Cod Project
The Gulf of Maine Cod Project (GMCP), based at the University of New Hampshire, is a multi-year research project that utilizes historical documents and archaeological data to document long-term changes in the marine environment and to establish biological indicators and population trends for fishes in the Northwest Atlantic region.

Academic Diving Program at Florida State University
The Academic Diving Program (ADP)was established in 1975 at Florida State University - where the mission of training and support for compressed gas diving in science and recreation have been actively supported since the early 1950's. Functioning as a part of Florida State's Marine Laboratory, the ADP is one of the largest and most active diving research, support, and training programs in the United States.

National Maritime Heritage Foundation (NMHF)
NMHF is dedicated to inspiring young people and enhancing lives through maritime adventures. NMHF accomplishes this mission by motivating young people to achieve through the sport of sailing, by increasing community awareness of maritime history, and by enhancing the District of Columbia's waterfront.
